we are in the process of considering other codebases to move over to, however DoT strikes our fancy, however i am concerned that the codebase might be... outdated now, due to the fact that there hasn't been a major release since 1.69r back in 2004, and 1.69s latest release (which is still in beta i might add) was released in 2007 and beta continued until 2010, but as of yet 1.69s hasn't been officially released as a stable version.

so would someone care to shed some light onto this matter for me..

Greetings,

I think a lot of folks have moved on, myself included - not for the reason of lack of development, but simply life. Back in 2007, Kal indicated to me that his time to devout to develop the DoT base was diminishing and realistically, when our lives become more demanding of our time, time is no longer a commodity; hence why I shut down and passed it on to a couple of select candidates that may have wanted to take on the project.

When you really look at your options, 1.69s beta6 is more stable than 95% of your existing MUD engines available for download at mud connector and other websites. Its easily customizable and you can alter it however you wish.

Hello,

I can't say a whole lot with regards to the development situation, but I've been running beat 6 for the past few months now and have found it to be relatively bug free (in comparison to other DOT releases, which I've always found to be less problematic than other code bases.)

You can still get it from this link, too: http://www.forums.dawnoftime.org/viewtopic.php?t=2422

I just wanted to pop in and wish you luck on your project, whatever you decide, and let you know that there are still a few of us here to answer questions (though, I'm a bit of a newbie myself when it comes to coding)

In addition to what Tathry stated, this codebase still has a highly operational and active support forum which you aren't going to find in many other places.

Personally imho, you really should go with 1.69s_beta6; namely because the base is far more feature rich than the preceding source code, plus all the 1.69r bugs that were discovered are fixed in the latest release.

Hi Primus,

Beta6 really should be called Dawn v1.69s.
There are no significant outstanding bugs I am aware of.
I just haven't released it as 1.69s for two reasons - lack of time and what i assumed was lack of interest.

Look at the following link for some of the many bugs fixed in 1.69s beta6:
http://www.forums.dawnoftime.org/viewforum.php?f=20

There was a vast number of improvements (as per the change logs and announcements) between R and S beta 6 - It has been probably 4+ years since I have looked at the 1.69r source, but from memory dawn1.69r doesn't even have object progs.

I recommend S beta 6 - if I ever do release an official S, it will be beta 6 + some additional code that will effectively be commented out with a number of #ifdef blocks. The code in the #ifdef code would contain code that I wrote for Myridian Fields - a small development mud I tinkered on some ideas for a while after closing down dawn.

So I expect going with beta 6 vs an official S release will be functionally the same out of the box.

Good luck,

- Kal

Hey Kal -

You still have MF up? I may want to drop by for old times sake. I've been recently getting hit with requests to my private email about relaunching a project - not certain though if I can put in the level of time that I once did. Was a great experience though!
