Friends, (and ok you barbarians also Wink)
When you reach hero you have a priviledge to restring objects
under rules stated under help restring. It's long so I won't quote it here.
It doesn't really help a player restring... it informs the player of the rules. Let's add the actual HELP to it. Some players, for example, who may be gynocologists by trade have trouble plugging in parameters with mere syntax layouts i.e., string obj <name_of_object> <field> <string> .
AND there is a buggish possibility that they get into a dilemma where
no matter what they do it will keep writing their short to gibberish. So an
order need be explained in steps how to restring your objects.
Here is my suggestion for addendum to help restring... (you know actually
the current help restring reference should be help restringrules... hmmmm)
My suggestion:

Quote:
hero restring noglitch method:
READ THE RESTRING RULES
1. Write down a long, short, and new name for the object before doing this. finalize your thoughts for it.
long = description of object laying on the ground.
short = description appearing in your eq or when players look at you.
name = value or name in quotes when you lore the object.
2. Wear or hold the object.
3. lore object and get name in single quotes.
example: 'longsword wicked'
4. change long first with this syntax:
string obj 'name_of_object' long <string>
example: string obj 'longsword wicked' long a gleaming long sword lies partially buried here <enter>
The 'name' uses single quotes and long does not need quote marks and neither does the description.
5. now change the short:
string obj 'name_of_object' short <string>
example: string obj 'longsword wicked' short foo bars blade <enter>
The 'name' uses single quotes and short does not need quote marks and neither does the description.
6. now the name:
string obj 'name_of_object' name <string>
example: string obj 'longsword wicked' name blade foo bars <enter>
The 'name' uses single quotes and name does not need quote marks and neither does the description.
Try lore with the new name to see it. Try eq to see your short. Drop the object and look to see the long.
If you must mess with it more (change it again), use the new name. If you get in trouble and no matter what, it keeps writing your short to gibberish... you can't repair, then drop and donate and start over.
If you do it straight with the above example you will arrive every time.
Mr. Green

Wow, someone actually contributing a helpfile! Smile

Good idea, I will include it in the next release.

Thanks,

- Kal

p.s. a hero can only change the short on objects which prevents them changing their own short etc.
