i tried to run bootdawn.pl as per the instructions i could understand
i set all the permissions to use the file however when i try to run the file
it says ":is not a directory. can anyone point me into the right direction on what i'm doing wrong here? i really have no experience with crontab or perl

I haven't used this script, but it looks straightforward enough, on the face of it. Have you set the paths correctly for $exec, $logdir, and $startPath ?

i'm pretty sure that the paths are right,
my directory structure is as follows:
/home/chaos/chaos/
chaos being the user and chaos being the binary(i assume binary is the mud files, with the dawn file?) i'm not sure why it was named /chaos/chaos/
if it where me i'd do /chaos/ooc
ooc = order of chaos (but whatever)

so i have this:
$exec = "ulimit -c unlimited ; /home/chaos/chaos/dawn";
$logdir = "/home/chaos/chaos/logs/game";
$startPath = "/home/chaos/chaos";

the bootdawn.pl is in:
/home/chaos/bin/bootdawn.pl

is this right way to do this or have i messed up somewhere?

thanks for the quick response,

Paxter

in your case, the binary file is the dawn file, and the /home/chaos/chaos directory is where your mud files are. the binary is the executable file that you use to run the mud.

did you move your bootdawn.pl script to /home/chaos/bin/bootdawn.pl? it seems to me that's where your problem probably is. my bootdawn.pl is in src/extras. you should be able to move it whereever you like, but unless you've moved it, you are probably pointing in the wrong place.

for anyone looking for the answer to this problem in the future, if you're trying to run the bootdawn.pl script in linux, you need to run dos2unix against it to strip out the ^M at the end of the line (or do it by hand, or ... well, you get the point.)
